The descriptions are taken from the details contained in the 1870 twin-volume publication entitled "Highlanders of Scotland" where each print is accompanied by a write-up. In addition, we quote observations separately noted by Victorian author Amelia Murray MacGregor. Together, these detailed notes, made by contemporaries of the painter himself, offer an unparalleled and fascinating insight into the individual lives and personalities of the people depicted in the paintings, truly bringing each one to life and breathing heart and soul into an era gone by...
